Snapbacks ~ Nectridea is an extinct order of lepospondyl amphibians from the Carboniferous and Permian periods, which included animals such as Diplocaulus. In appearance, they would have resembled modern newts or aquatic salamanders. They had long flattened tails to aid in swimming, and well developed hind limbs, with a full set of five toes each. The forelimbs were somewhat reduced however, and like modern amphibians typically had only four toes each.

Snapbacks ~ Keraterpetontidae (“horned crawlers”) is an extinct family of lepospondyl amphibians that arose during the Late Carboniferous and died out during the early Permian period. Keraterpeton is an extinct genus of lepospondyl amphibian from the Carboniferous period of Europe and North America.Keraterpeton was a salamander-like creature about 30 centimetres (12 in) long. Its tail was remarkably long taking up two thirds of the animal’s total length, and was laterally flattened, presumably to aid in swimming. Its skull was round and short, especially when compared to its Permian relative, Diplocaulus. Its hind legs had five toes, and were longer than the forelimbs, which had only four toes. Although Keraterpeton had a long body, it did not have more vertebrae than most other amphibian species (15-26 on average).

Diceratosaurus is an extinct genus of nectridean lepospondyl within the family Keraterpetontidae. Fossils of Diceratosaurus were first described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1874.[1] The species D. brevirostris is well known from Jefferson County, Ohio, with approximately 50 specimens having been collected from the Ohio Diamond Coal Mine. The mine was situated in the village of Linton, which became obscure soon after operations were completed and the mine closed in 1921. Diploceraspis was a lepospondyl amphibian. It lived in Ohio during the Permian period. It closely resembles Diplocaulus, and is a relative. It generally sports the same features as Diplocaulus.
